Ella Hodges is a multimedia artist who loves things, but hates the relentless urge to consume. As new technologies and commodities emerge—and the Internet’s influence grows stronger—Hodges questions how these forces shape our sense of self. Raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she learned to value interactions with strangers and to GO OUTSIDE! She enjoys approaching life with both skepticism and a belief in inherent unique creativity. She’s kind of like a creative Swiss Army knife; versatile, sharp, and sometimes misplaced—but always gets things done-er.
While completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she delves into narratives around authenticity, power, access, and the performance of self. Her current focuses are on the complexities of capitalism, examining how consumerism reduces society to mere images, objects, and representations. Hodges probes at consumer’s relationship with commodities by deconstructing and reconstructing, challenging these visual conventions through manipulation, and revealing “the dirt of the process.” Above all, her current curiosity is how she can add more cool stuff to the world.
